Making fresh wreaths reminds me of my mom. She’s a florist and was always using fresh greens at Christmas time. It brings me such joy to be able to carry on that tradition! I’ve also done a blog on a DIY Christmas Centerpiece! I have also come to realize that there is scientific research behind why fresh greens make you feel so good. Not only do they smell & look amazing, but that smell is packed with health benefits! The aroma of fir, pine, cedar, and blue spruce contains compounds like alpha-pinene and limonene, which are known for their uplifting and calming effects. These compounds, found in essential oils, can reduce stress, improve focus, and even boost your immune system.

Studies have also shown that being around greenery reduces stress, boosts mood, and improves air quality by increasing oxygen levels and removing toxins. 🌿

How to Keep Greens Fresh Indoors

To maximize the longevity of your greenery:

• Mist lightly with water daily to keep them hydrated.
• Place them in cooler areas of your home, away from direct sunlight and heating vents.
• Dip stems in water before crafting to lock in moisture.

Materials You’ll Need

• Fresh greens (fir, pine, blue spruce, cedar, eucalyptus, juniper)
• Dried oranges (I purchased a bag of oranges from Azure Standard and dehydrated them in my dehydrator; however, you can also purchase dried oranges from Azure or dry them in your oven – sliced on parchment paper – 200 degreese – 3-4 hours – flip after first hour and leave them in the heated oven until dry).
• Bells
• Floral wire
• Ribbon (wired is best, but any will work!)
• Twine
• Scissors or garden shears

DIY CHRISTMAS SWAG Step-by-Step Instructions:

Forage Your Greens
Choose a mix of greens to add variety in color and texture. I used fir, pine, blue spruce, and cedar for a classic look, but eucalyptus and juniper with berries are excellent additions for a modern, vibrant feel.

Trim and Arrange the Greens
Trim the stems and lay them out, cut ends facing up. Place shorter pieces, like blue spruce or juniper with berries, in the front for added dimension.

Secure with Floral Wire
Wrap floral wire around the cut ends tightly. Flip the swag over and lift it to ensure all greens are secure. Add more wire if necessary.

Add Twine for Looks and Security
Wrap several layers of twine around the greens, both for decoration and extra stability.

Attach the Bells
Tie long strands of twine to your bells. Group them and arrange them to hang lower than where you’ll place your bow. Secure the twine to the tip of the swag by wrapping it around a few times and tying in a knot.

• Step 1: Choose your ribbon & cut a long piece of ribbon.
• Step 2: Create two loops on either side of the ribbon and hold the middle tightly.
• Step 3: Add more loops for a fuller bow, pinching the center as you go.
• Step 4: Wrap floral wire around the center to secure the bow. Leave extra wire for attaching the bow to the swag.
• Pro Tip: Wired ribbon makes shaping and fluffing easier, but this method works with any ribbon!

Attach the Bow
Use the floral wire to secure your bow to the swag. Fluff the ribbon until it looks just right.

Add Dried Oranges
Attach dried oranges with floral wire or hot glue, securing them directly to the branches.
